Jedi Academy is the only game we have found — other than older versions of the game like Jedi Outcast — that offers a complete and enjoyable swordfighting system where you can actually control the direction and power of your swings. It is with lightsabers by default (as it is Star Wars themed), but that can be easily changed with free and unobtrusive modifications. The following is a guide for new players on getting started with buying and installing the most basic components of the game.
To get a cheap and legal copy of Star Wars: Jedi Knight III Jedi Academy, you have two options: getting a physical copy of the CDs, which can be cheaper or more expensive depending on which seller you order from, or downloading it via Steam.
At the moment, the cheapest way to get a hardcopy of Jedi Academy besides eBay is on Amazon, for $5.75 plus shipping unless you get free shipping. This is the recommended route as it will install to the normal location and having a hardcopy means you can easily reinstall on another computer without a hassle with Steam. You can also check Google’s price listings, though its Amazon listing is out-of-date.
If you want Jedi Academy quickly and without a hardcopy, though keeping in mind that its install location will be different from the norm, you can use Steam’s listing which is currently for $9.99. The advantage of this method is free shipping, it’s fast (instant delivery to your computer via download), and Steam keeps your game up to date for you (but there has only been one patch to date).
If you bought Jedi Academy via Steam, it will keep it updated automatically so you don’t need to manually download the patch. If you bought and installed the hardcopy, go to this JK3Files page and download the file and install it. JK3Files is the site pretty much everyone uses for downloading mods for the game. Most mods are thoroughly described in the review and installation instructions are usually shown in the readme files.
However, another thing you will probably want to do is download the latest JA+ client plugin for your system. This will enable some advanced features, such as isolated dueling, on the majority of servers that you will end up playing on.
Once you have the game, the patch (automatic with Steam), and the client plugin, you are ready to go for the majority of servers. (A few servers use client-side only mods like Movie Battles II, which can be downloaded from JK3Files.) But Jedi Academy isn’t just your average point and click shooter – with your sword or lightsaber you will find that there is a whole new world that you need to learn about before you can get good at the game.
Learning how to play the game all on your own takes a lot longer than getting training from an experienced fighter. You can try School of War, or you can come to Azuma Zaibatsu’s server to get training from any of our warrior-teachers. If you want more in-depth training, consider registering on the forums and applying to our clan. We are a Japanese-themed clan with a military-style ranking system and three classes (Warrior, Officer, and Modder).
After gaining some experience with the game, you will realize that it is actually not a hard game at all. We think that this game is amazing and needs to live on and we hope you will join us.
